History of links

Linking is a strategy that began with the onset of the internet, when academic institutions were the primary users of the web. Links were created so that visitors could conveniently click on a citation to an article. In the beginning, articles with linking citations were considered more reputable. There was little concern regarding the fact that each time visitors clicked on an external link, they were being sent to a different website.
