Home BLOG Don't Waste Your PPC Budget On Useless Keywords

Keywords are essential. They are the words your customers type into search engines when looking for a particular item on the internet. Longer keywords, or long tail keywords, are a few words long. These words specifically identify what good or services you sell. Shorter keywords, consisting of one or two words, are generic and do not entice potential customers. Long tail keywords will change your clicks into customers. These clicks target individuals who already know what they want to purchase.

The Most Essential Component of PPC

Keywords are the most important aspect of your PPC. Do not waste your budget bidding on broad, generic keywords. For instance, let’s say you own a lawn company located in Kansas City, Missouri. It would be unwise to use the keyword “lawn company”. You want to target the group of people in your town who would be interested in your company. Bidding on the keyword “lawn and landscaping, Kansas City, Missouri” would bring you potential customers. Ultimately the cost per click and the overall competition would be significantly less.

How to Remove Irrelevant Keywords

Do not forget to free yourself of the bad keywords. Eliminate your PPC account of the irrelevant keywords you currently have in your account.

A few keyword tools, such as Google Adwords Keyword Tools, are a great tool for PPC accounts because they look at a list of words to determine if they are helpful to you based on the type of service or product you sell. Of course this is not the only way to select keywords. Computer programs have been known to make a mistake or two. If your PPC account has keywords in your keyword list that no one would ever type into the search engine to find you, then get rid of them! If you are unsure, then pause these words in your Adwords Editor, and ask someone you trust for input. There is no reason to waste money on keywords no one will ever use to find you online.

Keywords Should Be Tested

This may seem like a no-brainer, but be sure to test your keywords to ensure they follow the intended directions you had for them. For instance, if someone clicks on “lawn and landscaping, Kansas City, Missouri”, you want to be sure that the long tail keyword provides the desired results by taking visitors to the appropriate location on your website. Ask yourself if this keyword turn into leads and business opportunities. Be sure that your keywords are bringing in more business. If not, then eliminate them. Determine how effective your keywords are by using Adwords Conversion Tracking or a call tracking system.

What is the most effective way to manage your PPC account? By ensuring your site is filled with authentic, appropriate long tail keywords. Be aware of which keywords are effective and which are not by tracking them yourself or hiring a PPC manager to do this for you. Manage your PPC budget by using effective keywords.
